Opera launched its Max app for Android in December of last year in private alpha. Today they’re opening up signups to all Android users who want to try the beta.

Opera Max beta for AndroidOpera, most famous for its desktop browser, is bringing data compression to mobile phones. The company’s browsers already feature a “Turbo” mode to compress data before sending it off to users. Opera Max takes this same concept but applies it systemwide on Android phones.

Opera Max compresses video, image, and text data to help you get the most out of your data plan. While Max does degrade images and video quality, it does help save data and speeds up load times. Users with limited data plans may find Opera Max useful.

Opera Max isn’t the first app to feature operating system wide data compression. Onavo offers the same features on iOS, which is good since Opera Max is not available for iOS yet.

Those who want to join the pre-registration for the public beta can download the app below. Access to the beta “will be given out on a first-come first-served basis,” according to Opera.
